How Play First Golf Began..

At the heart of Play First Golf lies a conviction: that golf should be fun, inclusive, and approachable , especially for young people. This vision grew alongside the journey of Cole  Briggs, whose life in golf began at age six, began receiving coaching at seven, and after his first competitions at nine, carried him all the way onto his university golf team at the University of the Fraser Valley. During his time there, he and his teammates captured two Division Championships and two National Championships, experiences that deepened his understanding of teamwork, perseverance, and love for the game.

In 2020, when golf’s popularity surged, Cole accepted a coaching position. Over the next five years, Over the next five years, he refined his teaching skills, worked with young players, shaped his own style and philosophy, and absorbed the lessons of how to build meaningful golf experiences. Cole has taught golfers of all skill levels, but his passion lies in working with kids at the beginner and intermediate levels. His junior coaching has been heavily influenced bu the games and theory of DiscoverGolf, a program that uses the power of play to teach not only the fundamentals of golf but also confidence, creativity, and leadership.

Cole’s vision for Play First is not just about instruction. It’s built on a methodology of teaching through play, inspired by DiscoverGolf’s pioneering approach. As Richard Franklin explains:

Encouraged by close friends and family, Cole decided to step into ownership with his wife, Sarah and launch their own company: Play First Golf.

In the same spirit, Play First is committed to creating environments where youth can explore, experiment, move and play, with the club and ball serving as tools for bigger lessons: community, curiosity, confidence, collaboration, fun.

Cole is currently working toward his Class ‘A"‘ status with the PGA of Canada, specializing in Coaching. He’s constantly thinking of new ways and ideas for how to make golf accessible, enjoyable and attuned to the unique motivations of young players. And although stepping into the role of “boss and business owner” was something he approached with hesitation, those who know him best were clear: this was his next step, and he was ready.

With the encouragement of family and friends, and years of coaching experience behind him, Cole alongside Sarah, founded and runs Play First Golf. Together they are building a company rooted in the belief that learning through play doesn’t just build better golfers, it builds people who love the game.

Play First Golf is just getting started, and with Cole’s vision and tenacity, the journey ahead looks bright.

Senior Game Engineer

Hi! I’ve been playing golf for about 9 years now, and it’s become one of my biggest passions. I got into the sport thanks to my uncle, who’s a golf coach. He introduced me to the game, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

I have spent the last 6 years competing on the UFV women’s golf team, which has really helped me grow as a player and deepen my love for the game. Now, I’m excited to share what I’ve learned by teaching juniors and hosting ladies night clinics.

My goal is to create a fun, relaxed space where everyone feels welcome, whether you’re picking up a club for the first time or looking to take your game to the next level. I love helping others build confidence on the course and enjoy the game as much as I do!

Hey, I’m Sarah, Cole’s wife and co-founder of Play First Golf.

I’ve been alongside Cole through his championship tournaments and university golf years, and now as he has transitioned into coaching. Being surrounded by the game for so many years - on the course, summer camps and in everyday conversations - has allowed me to develop a strong understanding of golf and junior development. This experience has made stepping into this role feel like a natural and exciting next step.

Cole and I have been working behind the scenes with intention and heart, thinking through every detail to create a golf company that feels different, in the best way. Our goal is to build something that lasts, something people naturally gravitate toward, and something we’re proud to stand behind. We’re aiming high, and we’re just getting started.
